1- Facebook, Twitter take down disinformation campaigns
linked to Iran
Facebook says it has removed almost 800 “coordinated,
inauthentic” pages, groups, and accounts directed from Iran that were part of a
manipulation campaign operating in more than 20 countries.
The world's biggest social network said on January 31 it
coordinated closely with Twitter to discover the accounts, which exhibited
“malicious-looking indicators.”
The pages, 783 in total, were part of a campaign to promote
Iranian interests abroad by creating fake identities as residents of those
nations, Nathaniel Gleicher, head of cybersecurity policy at Facebook, said in
a statement.
Also on Thursday, Twitter said it had suspended 2,617
malicious accounts tied to Iran since August.
2- Germany, France, Britain to launch mechanism for trade
with Iran
Germany, France and Britain have officially set up a European
mechanism to facilitate non-dollar trade with Iran and circumvent US sanctions,
two diplomats said on Thursday.
The EU has been
preparing the system, in effect a clearing house that avoids monetary transfers
in dollars between the EU and Iran for months although it is unlikely to become
operational for several months due to technical details.
In a statement, the US Embassy in Berlin said: "As the
President has made clear, entities that continue to engage in sanctionable
activity involving Iran risk severe consequences that could include losing
access to the US financial system and the ability to do business with the
United States or US companies."
However, it added it did not expect the new payments system
would "in any way impact our maximum economic pressure campaign"
against Iran.
3- Midwifery Student Becomes Victim Of Road Accident, Fire At
Girls’ School
A female midwifery student from Bonab Azad University named
Damon Moludpour, lost her life at the Tabriz Hospital on Tuesday, January 29,
2019, due to a minibus overturn.
Last month, an Azad University bus overturned and crashed on
Tuesday, December 25, 2018, on the campus of the Sciences and Research
University, killing 10 passengers, including three young women, and injuring at
least 28.
4- Iran Continues To Hand Down Cruel Punishments For
Impoverished Convicted Thieves
A 27-year old man was sentenced to three years in prison and
74 lashes for “stealing a chicken” in Laly city in the southwestern province of
Khuzestan.
Quoted by the judiciary’s news agency Mizan Online, the Chief
Justice of the city confirmed the news on January 29, 2019.
“The defendant is persecuted for theft and on the other hand,
he has a history of committing theft, drugs crimes and disturbing public
order,” the chief justice said.
5- Iran Unveils New 'Cruise Missile' In Military Exhibit
Iran has unveiled a new missile, Ghassed 3(Messenger), on
Thursday in a military exhibition in Tehran, Mehr news agency reports.
The weapon is presented as an air-launched cruise missile,
although details of its capabilities have not been fully disclosed.
Iran’s ballistic missile program is one reason why President
Donald Trump pulled out of the 2015 nuclear deal and both the U.S. and European
powers are putting pressure on Tehran to curb its missile program
